I've heard it said that change only occurs when you step outside your comfort zone. A portfolio career may well comprise a variety of comfort zones; those places where we feel we know what we're doing.
There are inevitably times when you have to challenge and push yourself to do things that perhaps don't come naturally. With more than one area of expertise in a portfolio career, this could at times become too much so it's important to be careful not to overload yourself with too many new challenges in too many areas all in one go. Pacing yourself is key.
If you can manage it, keep all other areas of your portfolio career comfortably ticking over while developing and pushing boundaries in another. Portfolio careers can be exciting and exhilarating but don't be tempted to do too much at once, keep in mind that taking on new challenges must be about quality not quantity.
