I was introduced to Dropbox recently by a new colleague who said she loved it and wanted us to use it to share files on projects we are working on together. So what is this great gadget all about?
It's a web-based file-sharing system that allows you to create and share files and folders from any computer and from your mobile phone. It creates a Dropbox folder on as many computers as you choose to install it on, which works seamlessly like any other folder on your computer (no irritating logging in, uploading or downloading). You can also easily access files on other computers that you don't use frequently (e.g. if you're away on business or in an internet cafe) by accessing it through a clear and simple web portal.
It comes with a generous 2GB of free space and you can upgrade if and when you need more. It also has a public folder which allows you to upload files and create a URL to send to colleagues who don't use Dropbox e.g. if you just needed to send a large image file to a designer that you know would just clog up your email account if you tried to send it.
Another nifty little trick is to save your Internet Explorer favourites in Dropbox so that you can access them from whichever computer you are working on. These e-how instructions walked me through it and it definitely works.
As portfolio careers can often involve toggling between multiple clients, projects and locations, this neat remote solution is a real must-have. Having worked in offices with proper IT infrastructure and sophisticated remote working systems, I have to say Dropbox wins hands down in comparison and best of all it's free! It's also a great way to back up files and folders away from your own hardware. By using Dropbox, if you leave your laptop on a train one day, you won't have lost all of your multiple jobs' work so it provides peace of mind for you and your clients.
